Asian Handicap Betting

The Asian handicap betting market is a 2-way betting on the outcome of different sporting games, where the possibility for a draw is eliminated.

This market offers a few advantages over the traditional 3-way (fixed odds) betting market: increased mathematical chances of winning on a single bet (from 33.3% to 50%), reduced amount of profit margin assigned by the bookmaker, leading to higher odds – therefore better returns.

The term Handicap means that the presumed weaker team (the underdog) has received a head start (handicap, known as spread in US). This head start is like the game starts with the weaker team virtually leading the game with 0.25 goal, 0.5 goal, 0.75 goal , 1 goal, 1.5 goal, 1.25 goal etc.

Punters must either select the favoured team to overcome the handicap or back the underdog to hold it. The handicap value could be also 0 goals, such as when both teams are presumed equal in their chances to win. The Asian Handicap bet is settled by adding the handicap to the actual result of the game.

We have 3 types of asian handicap bets based on the goals offered as handicap:

1. Whole goals: 0, 1, 2 goals … -1, -2 goals …

This case is almost similar to 3-way betting, only that the draw possibility was eliminated (where the name of Draw No Bet also comes from). In this situation if we start with a handicap of 0, than the bet is settled based on the winning team. If we have a draw, the stake is refunded. For 1, 2 goals… the handicap is added to the score and give you the winning team or draw (if draw, bets are refunded).

2. Half goals: 0.5, 1.5, goals … -0.5, -1.5 goals …

For example if Home Team has received a 0.5 goal handicap against Away Team (Home Team +0.5) and the game ends with a draw, Home Team virtually wins the game by half a goal.

3. Quarter goals: 0.25, 0.75, 1.25, 1.75 goals … -0.25, -0.75, -1.25, -1.75 goals …

In this case please note that 0.25 is average value of 0 and 0.5 while 0.75 is average of 0.5 and 1 and so on. In such case the punter’s stake is actually split in half into 2 separate handicap bets. For example, if you bet 4 units on -1.75 goal handicap, in fact you bet 2 units on -1.5 goal handicap and 2 units on -2 goal handicap. If your team wins by 3-1, half of your stake is winning with the given odds (that going for the -1.5 handicap) and the other half will be refunded (on the -2 handicap). In the same way +1.25 goal handicap bet turns in two bets at +1 and +1.5 handicaps.
